’98-’99 Hurricanes Comeback from 2-1 Down to Defeat ’30-’31 Quakers in Six Games

The ’98-’99 Carolina Hurricanes entered this 1st Round matchup as heavy favorites, but struggled to gain a hold on this series early on. The ’30-’31 Quakers took Game’s 1 and 3 to take a 2-1 series lead before the ’98-’99 Hurricanes won three straight games to end the series. The Quaker offense bested the Hurricanes in a 5-4 win in Game 1 and Quaker goaltender Wilf Cude shut down in the Hurricanes in a 4-2 win in Game 3. However, the Hurricanes exploded for eight goals in a Game 4 win and took control of the series from there.

Keith Primeau lead the way for the Canes in this series. He posted five goals and six assists for 11 points while peppering the Quaker net with 51 shots. Winger Gary Roberts followed right behind Primeau in points with nine (five goals and four assists). Defenseman Glen Wesley played solid defense with a +9 rating while posting two goals and five assists for seven points.

The Quakers heavily relied on their goaltender Cude in this series. He posted a .927 save percentage in this series and kept this series closer than it probably should have been. He posted single totals of saves of 54 in Game 1, 57 in Game 2, 53 in Game 3, 44 in Game 4, 68 in Game 5 and 52 in Game 6. Offensively for the Quakers, 8-year veteran forward Hib Milks lead the way with six goals and five assists for 11 points.
