Well, the Bruce Boudreau-led ’08-’09 Washington Capitals underperformed in a playoff like only a Bruce Boudreau-led team can. Not only did they get upset, they got thoroughly dominated in this four-game sweep. They got outscored in these four games by a total of 21-6 even though the two teams averaged basically the same amount of shots per game.

Only nine players for the Caps registered a point and Alex Ovechkin, the so-called “Great 8,” posted only one assist in the four games. The leading scorer for the Caps was defenseman Mike Green, who notched five assists, but was a -12, which certainly sounds like Mike Green. Winger Alexander Semin and center Nicklas Backstrom both co-lead the Caps in goals with two. Goaltender Jose Theodore was not good at all in this series either. He posted a 4.25 GAA with a .851 SV%. Yikes.

For the Flames, they showed an explosive and balanced offensive attack. Besides their starting goaltender, only two Flames players did not register a point. To go along with the balance, the Flames had two guys that had an absolutely stellar series. Winger Bob MacMillan, who won the Selke in ’78-’79, was tied for the team lead in points with nine with two goals and seven assists. Center Guy Chouinard also posted nine points with six goals and three assists. Also, 19-year NHL veteran, Ivan Boldirev tallied five goals, including two in Game’s 1 and 4. In net, goalie Dan Bouchard had a very good series, posting a 1.50 GAA and a .959 SV%.

So, the 39th-seeded ’78-’79 Atlanta Flames pull off the upset and advance to the 2nd round to face the 7th-seeded ’25-’26 Ottawa Senators. A series in which the Flames look to be the favorite and could be this tournament’s cinderella.

The next matchup in the 1st Round is between the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres and the 42nd-seeded ’25-’26 Pittsburgh Pirates.
