Cinderella moves on! The 39th-seeded ’78-’79 Atlanta Flames committed their second upset of the tournament today in a dramatic seven game series with the 7th-seeded ’25-’26 Ottawa Senators. The two teams traded wins throughout the series with the Flames winning Game’s 1, 3, 5 and 7 and the Senators winning Game’s 2, 4 and 6. The Flames held a 2-1 lead in the 3rd period of Game 7 when Hall of Famer Frank Nighbor scored the game-tying goal, which sent the game into overtime. Longtime Flame, Guy Chouinard scored the series clincher in the first overtime to send the Flames to the 3rd Round.

The Senators were lead by NHL Legend Cy Denneny. The Hall of Famer and four-time Stanley Cup champ tallied five goals and seven assists for 12 points in the seven game series. Fellow Hall of Famer Hooley Smith was the other Senators to reach double digits in points with 10 courtesy of four goals and six assists. The only player for the Senators to finish with a plus/minus rating above even was defenseman Ed Gorman who was a +1. King Clancy, yeah that King Clancy, scored an overtime winner for the Senators in their 2-1 win in Game 4. Goaltender Alex Connell had a very good series for Ottawa, posting a 2.71 goals against average and a .922 save percentage.

Not only did Chouinard score the series clincher in Game 7 overtime, but he paced the Flames offensively in this series. He put up a remarkable six goals and five assists for 11 points in the seven games. He know has a total of 12 goals and eight assists for 20 points in 11 games in the tournament. His linemate Bob MacMillan, who also has had an incredible tournament, has gone toe-to-toe with Chouinard in points. MacMillan posted three goals and five assists against Ottawa to now have five goals and 12 assists for 17 points. Together with winger Darcy Rota, Chouinard and MacMillan are among the tournament leaders in plus/minus at +15. Goaltender Dan Bouchard did not have the same insane numbers against the Senators that he had in the 1st Round, but still put up pretty good numbers. He posted a 2.43 goals against average and a .932 save percentage with a shutout in Game 5.
