For only the fourth time in the nine series’ so far in the 2nd Round, the higher seed has won. The 9th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers swept the 24th-seeded ’07-’08 Florida Panthers. The GAG, goal-a-game, line for the Rangers, which consists center Jean Ratelle, Rod Gilbert on the right and captain Vic Hadfield on the left, combined for a total of 24 points in the four game sweep. Gilbert lead the Rangers in goals with seven and Hadfield led them in assists with eight. Ratelle, along with Dave Balon, were the only Rangers to score more than one goal, besides Gilbert of course, with each of them posting two goals. In net, Hall of Famer Ed Giacomin had a good series posting a 2.25 goals against average and a .930 save percentage.

For the Panthers, they got through to the 2nd Round after facing one of the weakest teams in the tournament. It was not surprising to see them get swept by a much better Rangers team. Offensively, they were led by longtime NHLer Richard Zednik, who posted one goal and three assists. Wingers David Booth and Michael Frolik both led the Panthers in goal scoring with two goals a piece in the four games. Goaltender Tomas Vokoun struggled against the Rangers attack. With an increased load in the 2nd Round, Vokoun, didn’t put up the same numbers as he did in the 1st Round. He posted a 4.25 goals against average and a .894 save percentage over the four games.
