The 8th-seeded ’78-’79 New York Islanders begin their tournament with a five-game series win over the 25th-seeded ’05-’06 Ottawa Senators. This Islanders team features many players that would make the Islanders dynasty years so great, including Bryan Trottier. He led the Islanders in scoring in the series, posting four goals and four assists for eight points. Right behind him were defensemen Denis Potvin and Stefan Persson who both posted seven points with Potvin tallying one goal and six assists and Persson tallying seven assists. Trottier’s four goals were tied for the team lead with John Tonelli and Mike Bossy. In net, this team could have had two different goalies because the two candidates played almost the same amount of games, but I went with the one who played slightly more games in the regular season, Glenn Resch. He had a solid series posting a 2.40 GAA and a .925 SV% in the five games, but Billy Smith will make more than one appearance in this tournament.

The Senators were only competitive in two of the five games, including Game 1 where captain Daniel Alfredsson scored an overtime winner. Alfie would lead the Sens offensively in this series with his four goals and two assists for six points. Winger Dany Heatley also posted six points, all assists. What? Yeah, I know. An out of nowhere offensive contribution came from winger Patrick Eaves who posted a goal and three assists in the five games. Big Zdeno Chara did not have a stand out series, posting one goal and one assist for two points while being a -8. After being a Vezina Candidate with his performance in the 1st Round, Dominik Hasek struggled in this series. He posted a 4.20 GAA and a .843 SV%. Back up Ray Emery made two appearances in the series and posted a .909 SV%.
