’95-’96 Colorado Avalanche Defeat ’99-’00 St. Louis Blues in an Incredibly Even Seven Games

This series was literally a toss up. The two teams posted nearly identical stats in every category with both teams scoring 21 goals in the seven games. However, someone had to win and the 12th-seeded ’95-’96 Colorado Avalanche defeated the 21st-seeded ’99-’00 St. Louis Blues in seven games. Valeri Kamensky was the leading goal scorer for the Avs with five, including two in Game 1 and two in Game 6. The Avs found themselves down 2-0 in entering the 3rd period of Game 6, facing elimination, but Kamensky helped instrument a comeback to force a Game 7 where the Avalanche took the series in a 5-1 drubbing. Claude Lemieux led the team in points through with his three goals and seven assists totaling for 10 points. Right behind him was Joe Sakic who posted two goals and seven assists for nine points. Peter Forsberg didn’t make much of an impact offensively, only mustering one goal and two assists, but depth proved to really push the Avalanche into the next round. In net, Patrick Roy had a good series with a .913 SV%, but was inconsistent at times.

For the Blues, the top guns were influential, but they couldn’t match the depth of Colorado. Defenseman Al MacInnis had a stellar series, posting four goals and five assists for nine points and was a +2 in the seven games. Winger Pavol Demitra also have a very good series, posting four goals and four assists for eight points and was a +4. Veterans Pierre Turgeon and Stephane Richer both totaled five points in the series with with both players posting one goal and four assists. Goaltender Roman Turek, much like Roy, had a good series with a .908 SV%, but was inconsisten at times.
