Brodeur, Luongo Go Save-for-Save, But ’96-’97 Devils Defeat ’10-’11 Canucks in Six Games

This series was all about the goaltending. Only twice did a game feature more than three total goals during the six games. For the 11th-seeded ’96-’97 New Jersey Devils, goaltender Martin Brodeur was the wall he has been for so many years. He allowed just eight goals in the six games and posted two shutout performances to go along with his insane .955 save percentage. The Devils did have an offensive standout in Doug Gilmour during this series. He posted five goals and three assists for eight points, which was twice as much as Scott Stevens who finished second in points with four, all assists. Gilmour really WAS the Devils’ offense in this series. Besides Gilmour, only one player score more than one goal, Bobby Holik (2). Gilmour scored both goals in a 2-1 Devils win in Game 1, he was a part of both Devils’ goals in a 3-2 loss in Game 4 and he scored the only goal in a 1-0 series-clinching win in Game 6.

Roberto Luongo did all that he could do to keep the Canucks in this series. He posted a remarkable .940 save percentage in the six games and made posted a 1-0 shutout in Game 5 to force a sixth game. In the series as a whole, Luongo only allowed 11 goals. Offensively, the Canucks sputtered. They were shutout twice and only mustered more than one goal twice. The Sedin twins were at the forefront of the offense, still. Daniel Sedin posted one goal and five assists for six points and Henrik Sedin posted one goal and one assist for two points. Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff pitched in nicely, potting four goals and tallying one assist for five points. Jeff Tambellini notched his only goal of the tournament in Luongo’s 1-0 shutout performance in Game 5.

So the 11th-seeded ’96-’97 New Jersey Devils advance to the 3rd Round where they will face the formidable 6th-seeded ’12-’13 Chicago Blackhawks.

This series effectively ends the 2nd Round!!!! The 3rd Round will begin next week with a matchup of the 3rd-seeded ’07-’08 Detroit Red Wings and the 19th-seeded ’88-’89 Calgary Flames.
