The ‘Battle of New York’ goes to the 9th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers in six games. The 8th-seeded ’78-’79 New York Islanders had the early lead in this series thanks to an overtime winner from John Tonelli in Game 1, but the Rangers would take the next three, two of which were one goal games. The Islanders fought off elimination in Game 5 thanks to a 6-0 drubbing of the Rangers and a 17-save shutout from Billy Smith. Smith by the way, would take over the starting role in this series, usurping Glenn Resch. Then, in Game 6 at the Garden, the Rangers forced overtime with a third period goal from Bobby Rousseau and then Walt Tkaczuk clinched the series in overtime for the Rangers.

Despite losing the series, the Islanders had some incredible performances, most notably was Mike Bossy. The goal-scoring machine put up eight goals and four assists for 12 points in the six games. His eight goals were good for most on the Islanders and tied for most in the series. Fellow Isles legend, Bryan Trottier, led them in assists with six on the series. The Islanders came into this series without a single player in double digits in points, but would leave the series with six players in double digits. Leading the way in points were Bossy and Trottier, but forwards Clark Gillies and John Tonelli and defensemen Stefan Persson and Denis Potvin all finished with more than 10 points. In goal, Glenn Resch, who was the starter in the 2nd Round for the Isles, lost his starting role after 10 goals in the first games of the series. He was replaced by Billy Smith and finished out the series with a 3.20 goals against average and a .891 save percentage, including a shutout in Game 5.

As the title of this post proclaims, the Rangers were lead in this series by Vic Hadfield. He tied Bossy for the most goals in the series with eight and he added six assists to total 14 points in six games. Defenseman Brad Park had a very good series and was second on the Rangers in goals in the series with four. Rod Gilbert, linemate of Hadfield, lead the Rangers in assists in the series with 10. The third member of Hadfields line, Jean Ratelle, was second on the team in assists in the series with five. Defenseman Rod Seiling joined Hadfield, Gilbert, Ratelle and Park as Rangers to finish this series in double digits in point totals in the tournament when he posted three goals and four assists for seven points. Park also led the Rangers in plus/minus in this series at +3. This was not a good series for goaltending and Hall of Famer Ed Giacomin was proof. He entered this series with solid, not spectacular, but solid statistics, but posted a 4.33 goals against average and a .874 save percentage in the six games against the Islanders.
