3rd Round Recap & Team Stat Leaders through Three Rounds

Incredibly, I am through the third round of my little project here. I have been pleasantly surprised with the number of hits my site has been getting so it has been keeping me motivated to continue with this project. The third round consisted of eight matchups and out of those eight matchups, six times the higher seed has won. The two lower seeds to advance to the Quarterfinal were the 9th-seeded ’71-’72 New York Rangers, who upset the 8th-seeded ’78-’79 New York Islanders in six games, and the 19th-seeded ’88-’89 Calgary Flames, who upset the 3rd-seeded ’07-’08 Detroit Red Wings in six games as well.

One of the biggest stories of the third round was the performance of Corey Crawford. The goaltender for the 6th-seeded ’12-’13 Chicago Blackhawks put up four consecutive shutouts in their six game series win over the 11th-seeded ’96-’97 New Jersey Devils. Another big story from this round was the end of the Cinderella run of the 39th-seeded ’78-’79 Atlanta Flames. They were finally eliminated by the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres in a four-game sweep. There were two other sweeps in the third round besides the Sabres over the Flames, which were the top-seeded ’76-’77 Montreal Canadiens over the 16th-seeded ’03-’04 Tampa Bay Lightning and the 4th-seeded ’73-’74 Boston Bruins over the 20th-seeded ’02-’03 Dallas Stars. The lone series to go to seven games was the matchup between the 18th-seeded ’06-’07 Anaheim Ducks over the 34th-seeded ’10-’11 Nashville Predators.
