The 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres have eliminated the 18th-seeded ’06-’07 Anaheim Ducks in five games thanks to some timely scoring and some timely goaltending. The Sabres dominated the Ducks in Game 1, allowing just 22 shots in a 2-0 win, with goaltender Don Edwards registering a shutout. The Ducks took Game 2 by a score of 4-1, with two goals from center Andy McDonald. Then, in Game 3, the Sabres scored five goals from five different players in a 5-3 win, including two goals on the power play. The Sabres doubled up the Ducks in shots in Game 3. In Game 4, the Sabres exploded for seven goals on 34 shots in a 7-3 win, with goals each from Rick Martin, Craig Ramsay and Tony McKegney. Then, thanks to a late goal in the third period from McDonald, the Ducks sen Game 5 into overtime and it lasted until the 2nd overtime when Ramsay ended the series halfway through the period.

McDonald was the best player for the Ducks in this series. He lead the Ducks in goals in the series with four and co-lead the team in points with seven alongside Teemu Selanne. The Ducks had a few different players score two goals, including Selanne, Chris Kunitz and Ryan Getzlaf. Captain and defenseman Scott Niedermayer led the Ducks in assists with six and he was followed up by, guess who, Selanne, who had five. Selanne finished the tournament leading the Ducks in goals (17) and points (29) while being fourth in assists (12). And guess who led the Ducks in plus/minus in the series? Yep, Selanne was a team-best +3 in the five games. In net, Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who had been one of the best goaltenders in the tournament, struggled for the first time here in this series. In the five games, he posted a 3.40 goals against average and a .902 save percentage. However, he finishes the tournament with a 2.45 goals against average and a .928 save percentage.

The Sabres got some balanced scoring in this series and that basically won them this series. Gilbert Perreault led them in goals with four and McKegney and Martin both potted three goals. Danny Gare‘s six assists were most among Sabres this series and he was followed up by defenseman John Van Boxmeer and winger Ric Seiling who both posted five assists. Gare, Perreault and Seiling also all co-lead the Sabres in points with six on the series. Van Boxmeer and Derek Smith both totaled five points. Van Boxmeer also led Buffalo in plus/minus in the five games at +4. Goaltender Don Edwards continued his stellar tournament with what might be considered his “worst” series so far. However, he still posted a 2.60 goals against average and a .911 save percentage.
