In Game 1, the 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres got on the board first and lost, but here in Game 2, the 19th-seeded ’88-’89 Calgary Flames potted the first goal. Just over two minutes into the opening period, Buffalo defenseman Larry Playfair got called for boarding. Halfway through the Flames PP, winger Joe Mullen potted his 10th goal of the tournament to put the Flames up 1-0. The Sabres would end up outshooting the Flames 11-9 in the first period, but the period would end 1-0. Once the Flames got the lead, they tightened up in their own zone and pretty much shut Buffalo down the rest of the game.

The second period would almost entirely be played 5-on-4. The Flames had one power play thanks to a holding penalty on Tony McKegney. However, the Sabres had three power plays, thanks to a cross-check penalty on Game 1 hero Theoren Fleury, a high-sticking penalty on Hakan Loob and a holding penalty on Gary Roberts. However, none of those power plays would feature a goal. The Flames got an insurance goal late in the second period from Jiri Hrdina, his second of the series. With a 2-0 lead after two periods, the Flames took it up a notch and almost doubled up the Sabres in shots in the third period. The game would finish 2-0 and Flames goaltender Mike Vernon would earn a 22-save shutout. To put this game in perspective, Buffalo had 11 shots in the first period, but they had just 11 shots over the next two periods.
