The 4th-seeded ’73-’74 Boston Bruins came into this game looking to tie the series up 2-2 and make it a three-game series, but the top-seeded ’76-’77 Montreal Canadiens put a stop to that in the first period. Boston got on the board first, though, with a goal from Don Marcotte almost five minutes into the game. However, the Canadiens scored two goals in just over a minute, halfway through the first period, from Guy Lafleur and Serge Savard. Then, while the Canadiens were killing off a Murray Wilson high-sticking penalty, Yvan Cournoyer potted a shorty to make it 3-1 Montreal. Early in the second period, the Bruins had a chance to cut the lead in half thanks to a roughing minor called on Savard, but the next goal of the game would come from the Canadiens late in the period from Yvon Lambert. His goal would also be the final goal of the game and Montreal wins Game 4 by the score of 4-1. Through the first two periods, this game was even matched with Montreal taking advantage of their opportunities more than Boston, but the Canadiens shut the Bruins down in the third period by allowing them just three shots on goal.
