The 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres now have to win every game left in this series if they want to move on to the Ultimate NHL Final. They have one down and three to go. They scored just 38 seconds into this game with a goal from Derek Smith and added another six minutes later from Gilbert Perreault, his 19th goal of the tournament. However, late in the first period, the 19th-seeded ’88-’89 Calgary Flames had a golden opportunity to cut the lead in half with a penalty shot. Calgary winger Gary Roberts beat Buffalo goaltender Don Edwards for his ninth goal of the tournament. The Flames would build off of the penalty shot goal and tie the game early in the second period with Joe Mullen‘s 11th goal of the tournament.

Less than a minute later, the Flames would take the lead with a goal from Brian MacLellan. With the lead Calgary goaltender Mike Vernon began to shut the door. Then, the Flames would add to their lead thanks to Joe Nieuwendyk‘s 17th goal of the tournament. Buffalo once held a 2-0 lead, but found themselves down 4-2 after the Nieuwendyk goal. However, 30 seconds later, Buffalo defenseman Bill Hajt would bang home an Edwards rebound for his first goal of the tournament to close the gap to 4-3. The Flames would amp up the pressure to protect their lead and add an insurance marker in the third, but the Sabres would eventually tie it very, very late in the third. In fact, with Edwards pulled for the extra man, Danny Gare potted the tying-goal with just 28 seconds left in regulation. Then, the Sabres would make quick work in overtime scoring the game-winning goal just one minute 35 seconds into the overtime period with Tony McKegney‘s 12th goal of the tournament.
