The 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres were down 3-0 in this series, but now they are one win away from forcing a Game 7. The first period here in Game 5 ended scoreless with Buffalo leading in shots 12-7. The first goal came almost five minutes into the second period when the top line for the Sabres potted yet another goal, this time from Danny Gare, his 13th of the tournament. Later in the second, right after the 19th-seeded ’88-’89 Calgary Flames killed off a Brad McCrimmon cross-checking penalty, Gare potted his second of the game to give the Sabres a 2-0 lead. Early in the third, Buffalo defenseman Jim Schoenfeld was called for roughing and gave Calgary their third power play of the game.
The Flames would take advantage of this one and Joe Nieuwendyk would get Calgary on the board with his 18th goal of the tournament. Less than three minutes later the Flames would tie it up at two with a goal from Hakan Loob who potted home a Don Edwards rebound off of a shot by Theoren Fleury. So after the Sabres outplayed the Flames in the first period, Calgary was the better team the rest of the way, outshooting the Sabres 20-10 in the last two periods. However, with less than four minutes left in the third period, Craig Ramsay would score yet another big goal for the Sabres and the eventual game-winner to force a Game 6.
