I was definitely not expecting this team to lose in the 1st Round. Nor was I expecting this team to not even win a game. However, both of those things happened.

1st Round:

Swept by 39th-seeded ’78-’79 Atlanta Flames, 4-0

This was the first full season of the Bruce Boudreau era in Washington. The Capitals finished the regular season with a record of 5-24-8, which was good for 108 points and 1st in the Southeast Division. The Caps were ranked third in the league in goals for with 272 and 20th in the league in goals against with 245. Hockey Reference ranked Washington’s strength of schedule as second worst in the league, but their SRS rating system had Washington as the ninth best team in the league that year. The Capitals met some very stiff competition in the playoffs. They eliminated the New York Rangers in seven games in the Conference Quarterfinals. Then, in the Conference Semifinals, they battled the Pittsburgh Penguins in a highly anticipated seven game series, but ultimate fell in seven games in the Sid vs. Ovi battle.

As usual, the ’08-’09 Capitals were led offensively by Alex Ovechkin. He posted team highs in both goals with 56 and points with 110. Nicklas Backstrom, as usual, was second on the team in points with 88, and posted a team high 66 assists. Alexander Semin was third on the team in points with 79. Alexander Semin was second on the team in goals behind Ovi with 34 and defenseman Mike Green was right behind him with 31. Behind backstrom, Ovi and Semin were second and third on the team in assists with 54 and 45, respectively. Surprisingly, Semin posted the team’s best plus/minus rating at +25. Green was right behind him with a +24 rating and Backstrom was third at +16. Goaltending was a bit of a problem with this Capitals team, as it has been for many of the recent teams in Washington. Jose Theodore made the most appearances and starts with 57 games played and he posted a 2.87 goals against average and a .900 save percentage. He was one of four goalies to make appearances for the Caps during the ’08-’09 season. Theodore lost his starting position during the playoffs and Semyon Varlamov took it from him. Varlamov posted a 2.53 GAA and a .918 SV% in 13 playoff games while Theodore appeared in two playoff games and posted a 3.72 GAA and a .818 SV%.

Up next is the #27 seed, the ’79-’80 Minnesota North Stars!
