’75-’76 Flames Defeat ’77-’78 Flames in Very Competitive Seven Game Series to Advance in Qualifier

The vaunted 4-5 matchup. The ’77-’78 Flames took Game 1 thanks to a game-winning goal from Guy Chouinard, his second of the game, just past halfway through the third period. One interesting side note, Tom Lysiak played for both the ’77-’78 Flames and the ’75-’76 Flames and scored three straight goals in Game 1, two for the ’77-’78 Flames with a goal for the ’75-’76 Flames in between. The ’75-’76 Flames came back in Game 2 and exploded for six goals while Dan Bouchard, who was the starting goaltender for both teams, earned a 34-save shutout. Defenseman Jean Lemieux was the only player to score more than one goal in the 6-0 rout. Game 3 found itself tied at the end of regulation with the two teams tied at three. Curt Bennett potted the game-winner just two and a half minutes into overtime to give the ’75-’76 Flames a 2-1 series lead.

In Game 4, the ’75-’76 Flames exploded yet again offensively scoring seven goals with four of them coming from winger Dave Kryskow. Goaltender Dan Bouchard allowed just two goals for the ’75-’76 Flames for the 7-2 win and a 3-1 series lead. With their backs up against the wall now, the ’77-’78 Flames took Game’s 5 and 6 in overtime thanks to overtime winners from Eric Vail and Tom Lysiak. Then, in Game 7, the ’77-’78 Flames continued their momentum with a goal from Lysiak just over three minutes in. However, the ’75-’76 Flames scored two goals late in the opening frame, from Randy Menery and Kryskow, to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. Bill Clement notted the game up in the second for the ’77-’78 Flames, but Bill Flett scored the eventual series-clincher for the ’75-’76 Flames with just over four minutes left in the third period.
