Goaltender Dan Bouchard Shuts It Down as ’75-’76 Flames Upset Top-Seeded ’76-’77 Flames to Reach Qualifier Final

Despite being down 2-1 and 3-2, the 5th-seeded ’75-’76 Atlanta Flames have upset the top-seeded ’76-’77 Atlanta Flames to clinch a spot in the Qualifying Final. Despite allowing a total of 14 goals in just Game’s 2 and 3, goaltender Dan Bouchard allowed a total of just nine goals in the other five games and was the biggest reason for the upset. Curt Bennett potted two goals and Bouchard allowed just one goal on 37 shots to help clinch a dominant 6-1 win in Game 1. In Game’s 2 and 3, forwards Guy Chouinard and Tom Lysiak, along with defenseman Richard Mulhern powered the ’76-’77 Flames into a 2-1 series lead.

Lysiak, also on the ’75-’76 Flames’ roster, potted the eventual game-winner on the PP in Game 4 to make this series a three-game series. Phil Myre posted a 41-save shutout for the ’76-’77 Flames in Game 5. Eric Vail was the lone goal scorer for the ’76-’77 Flames for a 1-0 victory. That is when Bouchard took over. Bennett and Bill Clement each registered three points and Bouchard allowed just two goals in a 7-2 win in Game 6. Finally, in Game 7, Bouchard allowed two goals on 39 shots while defenseman Barry Gibbs came out of nowhere to play the role of hero offensively with one goal and two assists for three points.
