The opening game of this series was tied heading into the third period. After two coincidental minors for roughing the ’71-’72 California Golden Seals took a 2-1 lead thanks to a goal by defenseman Paul Shmyr. However, Walt McKechnie scored just 36 seconds later for the ’72-’73 California Golden Seals to tie it back up. The ’71-’72 Golden Seals would pot two more goals later in the period from Reggie Leach and defenseman Carol Vadnais to claim Game 1 by a final of 4-2.
