6th-Seeded ’08-’09 Thrashers First Lower Seed to Advance, Upset 3rd-Seeded ’09-’10 Thrashers in Seven Games

The 6th-seeded ’08-’09 Atlanta Thrashers have pulled off the first upset of the 2015 Atlanta Thrashers Qualifying Tournament. It didn’t start off so well for them, though. The 3rd-seeded ’09-’10 Atlanta Thrashers took Game 1 thanks to goals from Nik Antropov, Ilya Kovalchuk and Clarke MacArthur in the second period to propel them to a 5-2 win. The ’08-’09 Thrashers responded with 6-4 win in Game 2. The two teams combined for seven goals in the first period alone. Amazingly, they came from seven different players. However, Ilya Kovalchuk posted two goals and an assist in the game for the ’08-’09 Thrashers to lead the way. Kovalchuk then scored the eventual game-winner in Game 3 for the ’09-’10 Thrashers as they took Game 3 by a final 4-2. Then, in Game 4, the ’08-’09 Thrashers scored three goals in just under five minutes in the first period to help them tie the series up 2-2.

Kovalchuk scored two goals in just 22 seconds in the first period of Game 5 for the ’08-’09 Thrashers. He then completed the natural hat trick late in the second period as the ’08-’09 Thrashers took a 3-1 lead. After the ’09-’10 Thrashers scored two straight to tie it up, Vyacheslav Kozlov restored the lead for the ’08-’09 Thrashers and shortly after Kovalchuk potted his fourth of the game to retake command of the game. Evander Kane scored to bring the ’09-’10 Thrashers back within one, but they could not find the equalizer. The ’09-’10 Thrashers forced a Game 7 with a 6-4 win in Game 6 thanks to three assists apiece from defensemen Toby Enstrom and Pavel Kubina. Then, in Game 7, the ’08-’09 Thrashers rallied off three consecutive goals in the first after giving up the first goal of the game and they took that 3-1 lead into the third period. Kozlov scored four plus minutes into the final period to give the ’08-’09 Thrashers a 4-1 lead. Antropov responded for the ’09-’10 Thrashers just 12 seconds after that to make it 4-2. However, journeyman Marty Reasoner potted the clincher just past the 13:00 mark of the third to seal the upset and a 5-2 win in Game 7.
