The 5th-seeded ’94-’95 Quebec Nordiques, despite losing out in five games, appeared to be the better side in terms of puck possession and scoring opportunities. They outshot the 4th-seeded ’86-’87 Quebec Nordiques in all five games. The ’86-’87 Nordiques opened the series with a 6-4 win in Game 1 thanks to 47 saves by Clint Malarchuk and three poitns from Michel Goulet. In Game 2, the two teams combined for six goals in the opening period and Goulet recorded a hat trick in the first period alone. The ’94-’95 Nordiques trailed 5-2 going into the third period. After goals from Owen Nolan and Sylvain Lefebvre, they came back to within one with 10+ minutes to go, but they could never equalize.
The ’86-’87 Nordiques were outshot 40-29 in Game 3, but thanks to a power play goal from Brent Ashton and an even strength goal from Peter Stastny gave them a 4-2 win. In Game 4, the ’94-’95 Nordiques finished with 70 shots on goal and the ’86-’87 Nordiques finished with 40 shots on goal. It was the ’94-’95 Nordiques’ first win in the series, avoiding the sweep, thanks to an overtime winner from Nolan with three plus minutes left in the overtime period. Malarchuk’s 67 saves were a series high in Game 4. It was Nolan’s second goal and third point of the game and Joe Sakic also posted three points in the game. Game 5 turned out to be the series-deciding game as the ’86-’87 Nordiques won 5-3. Goulet put up another three point performance and Peter Stastny potted two goals.
