Shorthanded, Double Overtime Winner in Game 7 from Paul Gillis Completes Upset; 6th-Seeded ’85-’86 Nordiques Defeat Reigning Representatives and 3rd-Seeded ’83-’84 Nordiques

It was clear from the start that this was going to be a high-scoring series. The reigning representatives, the 3rd-seeded ’83-’84 Quebec Nordiques, put up 10 goals in a 10-5 win in Game 1 from seven different players. Defenseman Mario Marois registered a hat trick for the ’83-’84 Nordiques and Michel Goulet posted a team-high four assists and five points in the win. The ’83-’84 Nordiques then shutout the 6th-seeded ’85-’86 Quebec Nordiques in Game 2. The final was 5-0 and the power play accounted for three goals for the ’83-’84 Nordiques with Goulet scoring twice. The ’85-’86 Nordiques responded from the two big losses in Game’s 1 and 2 by winning Game’s 3 and 4 5-4. Goulet and Peter Stastny led the charge in Game 3 with three and four points, respectively. Then, Dale Hunter‘s three points led the way for the ’85-’86 Nordiques in Game 4 as he scored the game winner on the power play at the 13:59 mark of the third period.

The ’85-’86 Nordiques, despite being outshot 54-45, won Game 5 by a score of 8-6. Goulet potted four goals and added an assist for five points. Peter also totaled five points in the Game 5 win. With their backs now against the wall and one loss away from elimination, the ’83-’84 dominated Game 6 and won 7-3. Peter registered a hat trick while his brother Anton Stastny totaled three points, along with Goulet. With the momentum from their big win in Game 6, the ’83-’84 Nordiques opened a 5-2 lead after two periods of play. A quick goal from Hunter started what would be a furious third period for the ’85-’86 Nordiques. With the lead now 5-3, a goal from winger Steve Patrick closed the gap to 5-4. Then, winger Tony McKegney got one back for the ’83-’84 Nordiques just 29 seconds later to make it 6-4. Goulet potted one for the ’85-’86 Nordiques to bring them back within one.

Then, in the final minute and goaltender Mario Gosselin pulled for an extra attacker, Goulet would score yet again to tie the game at six with 31 seconds left. Game 7 would go into overtime, but would need a second overtime. The ’83-’84 Nordiques outshot the ’85-’86 Nordiques 16-6 in the first overtime. Defenseman Randy Moller, late in the first overtime, for the ’85-’86 Nordiques received five and a game for charging, which set them shorthanded for five minutes. That penalty carried over into the second overtime, but it was the ’85-’86 Nordiques just 44 seconds into the second overtime to end the series with a shorty from the unlikely Paul Gillis for his FIRST POINT OF THE SERIES. However, Gosselin was the biggest piece of the comeback for after he came in to replace Clint Malarchuk allowed just one goal on 40 shots in 55 minutes of play.

So, the 1st Round of the 2015 Quebec Nordiques Qualifying Tournament ends on a very high note. That was the first series of the opening round to last longer than five games and by far the best series of the 1st Round. The Semifinal round will take place tomorrow!
