Top-Seeded ’84-’85 Nordiques Defeat 7th-Seeded ’92-’93 Nordiques in Six Games to Clinch Spot in 2015 UNP

The 7th-seeded ’92-’93 Quebec Nordiques looked like the favorite to win this series early on. They scored three straight goals in the second half of the second period to take a 4-3 lead into the third. However, two goals from Michel Goulet, his third and fourth of the game, gave the lead right back to the top-seeded ’84-’85 Quebec Nordiques. Martin Rucinsky scored at the 11:27 mark to tie the game at five for the ’92-’93 Nordiques, which forced overtime and Rucinsky then scored almost four and a half minutes into the second overtime period to win Game 1, 6-5. The ’84-’85 Nordiques rebounded with an 8-4 win in Game 2 on the back of two goals from both Goulet and defenseman Randy Moller, who finished with a total of five points.

Owen Nolan scored a hat trick and added an assist for the ’92-’93 Nordiques in Game 3. They scored two goals a period, but were unable to take the game in regulation. However, just over a minute into overtime, Andrei Kovalenko scored to give the ’92-’93 Nordiques a 7-6 win and a 2-1 series lead. Joe Sakic and Mats Sundin both pitched in three points in the win. In Game 4, Goulet and Moller, again, teamed up to lead the ’84-’85 Nordiques to a 9-6 win as each of them totaled five points in the game. With the series now tied 2-2, the ’84-’85 Nordiques found themselves down 5-2 after the first period of Game 5. However, they chipped away and eventually Anton Stastny gave the ’84-’85 Nordiques a 6-5 lead and Brent Ashton added an empty-netter in the final minute. Unlike Game 5, in Game 6, the ’84-’85 Nordiques opened a big lead after the first period. Just like Game 5, a team chipped away at a first period lead to eventually tie the game. Kovalenko tied the game for the ’92-’93 Nordiques 54 seconds into the third period. However, two goals in a span of just over a minute later in the third gave the ’84-’85 Nordiques a 7-5 lead, which would be the final and mean the end of the series.
