8th-seeded ’31-’32 Americans Upset Top-seeded ’35-’36 Americans in Five Games Thanks to Two Overtime Wins

This series began with two comebacks in the third period and a ridiculously quick overtime goal. The top-seeded ’35-’36 New York Americans held a 2-1 lead at the start of the third period. However, the 8th-seeded ’31-’32 New York Americans score two goals in a span of a minute and 35 seconds early in the third. The ’35-’36 Amerks pulled their goalie in the final minute and defenseman Red Dutton scored with just nine seconds left on the clock to force overtime. However, defenseman Bert McInenly scored three seconds into overtime for the ’31-’32 Amerks to take the opening game 4-3. The ’35-’36 Amerks then won Game 2 by a final of 7-1 thanks to five goals from Nels Stewart.

Roy Worters, the starting tendy for both teams, earned a 37-save shutout for the ’31-’32 Amerks in Game 3 as they won 2-0. Game 4 was tied 2-2 after regulation and once again, McInenly won it for the ’31-’32 Amerks with his second goal of the game four and a half minutes into the overtime. The two sides then combined for seven goals in the third period alone in Game 5. The ’31-’32 Amerks were up 6-1 with six goals from six different players. However, the ’35-’36 Amerks scored four consecutive goals in the third, including a PP tally from Eddie Wiseman to make it 6-5. Worters and the ’31-’32 Amerks held onto that lead, though, to finish the five-game upset.
