Double Overtime Winner in Game 6 from Kevin Dineen Sends ’85-’86 Whalers Back to the UNP

The upset-minded 7th seed, the ’79-’80 Hartford Whalers, took the top-seeded ’85-’86 Hartford Whalers by surprise in Game 1. Mike Rogers scored twice and defenseman Mark Howe tallied a goal and four assists as the ’79-’80 Whalers won the opening game 6-2. In Game 2, the two teams combined for seven goals in the first period alone. The two teams went into the third period tied 5-5. Sylvain Turgeon scored for the ’85-’86 Whalers two plus minutes into the third period to take a 6-5 lead. However, Jordy Douglas tied it almost six minutes later. At the 16:38 mark, though, lesser known son of Gordie Howe and brother to Mark, Marty Howe was called for spearing giving the top seed a late PP. It took less than a minute for Stew Gavin to capitalize on that PP and eventually was the game-winning goal. The ’79-’80 Whalers outplayed the ’85-’86 Whalers in terms of shots on goal in the second and third period of Game 3, but the ’85-’86 Whalers’ four goals in the first period was the difference. Ron Francis accounted for two of those four goals.

The ’85-’86 Whalers scored another late winner in regulation in Game 4. Pat Boutette tied Game 4 6-6 just under two minutes left in the third period for the ’79-’80 Whalers. However, Boutette was called for boarding just six seconds after his goal and then defenseman Dave Babych scored on that PP with just four seconds left in regulation to give the top seed a 3-1 series lead. Now trailing in the series, the ’79-’80 Whalers needed a late PP goal from Rogers to stave off elimination and force overtime where Tom Rowe ended it just over four minutes in to force a Game 6 .he ’79-’80 Whalers then held a slight edge in the stats in Game 6 despite trailing in the third period, but with the net empty net, Mark Howe tied the game at six with just two seconds remaining in regulation. They then put 20 shots on goal in overtime, but the two teams couldn’t find a goal in 20 minutes of play. So, in double overtime, Kevin Dineen scored his second goal of the game for the ’85-’86 Whalers and clinch a spot in the 2015 Ultimate NHL Playoff. Despite allowing six goals in the game, goaltender Mike Liut made 68 saves in Game 6 for the ’85-’86 Whalers to deny the upset-minded lower seed a chance at a seventh game.
