8th-Seeded ’82-’83 Minnesota North Stars Sweep Top-Seeded ’90-’91 North Stars in a NOT So Shocking Upset

The top-seeded ’90-’91 Minnesota North Stars earned their top seed due to their incredible playoff run, but they were a team that got hot at the right time after a not-so-good regular season. So, an upset here isn’t too shocking. They held a 4-2 lead late in the second period of the opening game, but the 8th-seeded ’82-’83 Minnesota North Stars scored twice before the end of the period. The ’82-’83 North Stars then scored four goals in the third to take Game 1 by a final of 8-5. Tom McCarthy, Bobby Smith and Willi Plett all scored two goals in the opening game. The ’82-’83 North Stars then scored four goals in the second period of Game 2 on their way to a 7-4 win. Tim Young potted a hat trick to lead the way. The ’82-’83 North Stars opened Game 3 with five goals in the opening period. Three of those five came on a five minute PP thanks to Basil McRae‘s spearing major and ejection. Steve Payne accounted for two of those three PP goals. Then, in the final minute of the period, there was fight between Dave Gagner of the ’90-’91 North Stars and Dino Ciccarelli of the ’82-’83 North Stars with Gagner also getting called for instigation and also received a 10-minute misconduct. A shorthanded goal from defenseman Brad Maxwell in the final seconds earned a 6-5 win for the lower seed and a 3-0 series lead. Gilles Meloche then pitched a 39-save shutout for the ’82-’83 North Stars in Game 4 as Smith and Brian Bellows both potted two goals in an 8-0 win to complete the sweep.
