3rd-seeded ’79-’80 North Stars Defeat 6th-seeded ’70-’71 North Stars as Meloche Posts 2.00 GAA after Game 1

The 6th-seeded ’70-’71 Minnesota North Stars held a 3-1 lead after two periods with two goals from Bill Goldsworthy. However, the 3rd-seeded ’79-’80 Minnesota North Stars tied the game almost halfway through the third period with goals from Al MacAdam and Bobby Smith. Goldsworthy then potted his third goal for a hat trick to give the ’70-’71 North Stars lead right back. Then, with just 13 seconds left in the third and with the extra attacker, Tom McCarthy potted home a rebound to force an overtime. A minute and a half into overtime, defenseman Barry Gibbs won it for the ’70-’71 North Stars with his second goal of the game. In Game 2, the ’79-’80 North Stars took a 4-1 lead into the second period with MacAdam scoring just 13 seconds into the game. That was all the offense they would’ve need as they won 5-2. Goaltender Gilles Meloche stopped 34 of 36 shots in the win.

Game 3 was a low-scoring affair. The game was tied going into the third period when Bobby Smith scored just 30 seconds into the final frame and then MacAdam scored just eight seconds after that for a 3-1 lead out of nowhere. That would be the final as Meloche made 36 saves on 37 shots against. The ’70-’71 North Stars trailed 3-2 late in the third when they pulled goaltender Cesare Maniago for the extra attacker. Winger Danny Grant tied the game for the ’70-’71 North Stars with just 23 seconds left to force an overtime. MacAdam won it in overtime for the ’79-’80 North Stars to give them a 3-1 series lead. The ’79-’80 North Stars then thwarted the ’70-’71 North Stars in Game 5 by a final of 9-2. Tim Young potted a hat trick and Ron Zanussi and defenseman Fred Barrett both posted three assists.
