Reigning Representatives, 3rd-seeded ’79-’80 North Stars Sweep 2nd-seeded ’80-’81 North Stars

The 3rd-seeded ’79-’80 Minnesota North Stars got off to a great start on their way to the sweep. They took the opening game by a final of 7-3 by scoring three goals in both the first and second periods. Steve Payne led the way with two goals and one assist while Bobby Smith tallied two assists. After their easy win in Game 1, the ’79-’80 North Stars had a much tougher time with the 2nd-seeded ’80-’81 Minnesota North Stars in Game’s 2 and 3. Smith and Kent-Erik Andersson scored for the ’80-’81 North Stars in the first period to give them a 2-1 lead going into the second. The ’79-’80 North Stars tied it in the second and then took the lead almost halfway through the third thanks to a goal from Tim Young. However, Al MacAdam tied it back up just four and a half minutes later which eventually forced an overtime. Payne ended the overtime just 22 seconds in for the ’79-’80 North Stars.

Game 3 needed an overtime as well after the ’80-’81 North Stars scored two goals early in the third to tie the game at five. It was Payne, again, for the ’79-’80 North Stars that won it in overtime and gave them a 3-0 series lead. A little side note in Game 3, defenseman Brad Maxwell of the ’79-’80 North Stars was called for intentionally injuring an opponent so he received a five-minute major for elbowing and a 10-minute gross misconduct (ejection). Also, Steve Christoff had a chance to win the game early in overtime for the ’79-’80 North Stars thanks to a penalty shot, but he was denied Gilles Meloche. Then, in Game 4, 12 players registered a point for the ’79-’80 North Stars as they completed the sweep with a 6-3 win.
