Overtime Winner from Neal Broten in Game 5 Sees ’82-’83 North Stars Through to UNP; Defeat Reigning Representatives, ’79-’80 North Stars

Since their first game of this qualifying tournament, the 8th-seeded ’82-’83 Minnesota North Stars looked like a team of destiny. In Game 1 here, the ’82-’83 North Stars combined stellar goaltending and explosive offense. Gilles Meloche stopped 43 of 45 shots against in the win while Neal Broten potted three goals and added two assists for five points. Then, in Game 2, the 3rd-seeded ’79-’80 Minnesota North Stars tied the game 2-2 thanks to a goal from Steve Payne just 17 seconds into the second period. The game remained tied until the third period when the ’82-’83 North Stars scored three unanswered goals, including Bobby Smith‘s second of the game. The ’79-’80 North Stars finally got on the board in the series with an 8-3 win in Game 3. They scored six goals in the third period with two of them coming from defenseman Paul Shmyr.

The ’82-’83 North Stars rebounded with domination of their own in a 10-3 win in Game 4. Broten once again was the leader as he posted an incredible four goals and four assists for eight points in the win. In Game 5, Dino Ciccarelli scored early on in the third period to give the ’82-’83 North Stars a 3-1 lead. However, the ’79-’80 North Stars scored twice in the final minutes to force overtime with Shmyr scoring with 44 seconds left in the game and with the extra attacker. Broten then won the game for the ’82-’83 North Stars four plus minutes into the overtime to clinch a spot in the Ultimate NHL Playoff.
