4th-seeded ’19-’20 Senators Defeat 6th-seeded ’25-’26 Senators in Seven Games after Blowing 3-0 Lead; Will Make UNP Debut

The reigning representatives, the 6th-seeded ’25-’26 Ottawa Senators, found themselves down 3-0 in the 2015 Ottawa Senators (original) Qualifying Tournament Final. They won the next three games all in overtime to miraculously force a Game 7. Back in Game 1, the 4th-seeded ’19-’20 Ottawa Senators potted three goals in the third period to take the opening game 4-1 as Jack Darragh‘s three points led the way. Darragh, along with Frank Nighbor, both totaled three points then in Game 2 as the ’19-’20 Senators opened a 2-0 series lead. Defenseman Sprague Cleghorn scored the eventual game-winner for the ’19-’20 Senators in Game 3 early in the third to open a 3-0 series lead. Then, in the second period of Game 4, a PP goal from Nighbor gave the ’25-’26 Senators a 4-1 lead. The ’19-’20 Senators scored three unanswered goals with Cy Denneny‘s goal in the third forcing an overtime. Denneny then scored the overtime winner for the ’25-’26 Senators just over eight minutes into the period.

In Game 5, Denneny opened the scoring in the game as he scored in the final minute of the second period for the ’25-’26 Senators. The ’19-’20 Senators tied the game a little more than halfway through the third period thanks to Nighbor, yet again. However, the legendary defenseman King Clancy won the game in overtime for the ’25-’26 Senators who staved off elimination for the second time. Denneny opened the scoring again in Game 6, but this time for the ’19-’20 Senators late in the first period. They held that lead all the way to the 11:16 mark of the third period when Hooley Smith scored for the ’25-’26 Senators. Smith then won the game three plus minutes into overtime for the ’25-’26 Senators’ third straight overtime win to force a seventh game. Nighbor, who led the ’19-’20 Senators all series, took control in Game 7. He posted two goals and two assists as he was involved in all four goals for the ’19-’20 Senators in a 4-2 win that ended the series.
