Top-seeded ’13-’14 Blue Jackets Rout 2nd-seeded ’08-’09 Blue Jackets in Game 7, 7-1, to Reach 2nd UNP Appearance

The series started with the top-seeded ’13-’14 Blue Jackets taking a 3-0 lead just under 13 minutes into Game 1. The 2nd-seeded ’08-’09 Blue Jackets chipped away and with two goals in the third from Rick Nash, his second and third of the game, they tied the game and forced overtime. Nick Foligno scored the overtime winner eight minutes and 15 seconds into overtime as the ’13-’14 Blue Jackets opened a 1-0 series lead. The ’08-’09 Blue Jackets responded by taking Game 2 by a score of 3-2. Nash scored the eventual game-winner on the PP just 51 seconds into the third period. In Game 3, a goal from defenseman Jack Johnson 4 seconds into the second period gave the ’13-’14 Blue Jackets a 2-0 lead. The ’08-’09 Blue Jackets potted two goals in response later in the second period to tie the game. There would be four full periods before another goal was scored. R.J. Umberger ended Game 3 in the fourth overtime to give the ’13-’14 Blue Jackets a 2-1 series lead. That Game 3 featured 131 shots on goal as Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 58 of 60 and Steve Mason stopped 68 of 71.

Game 4 was tied 2-2 in the third when defenseman Jan Hejda scored seven and a half minutes into the period to give the ’08-’09 Blue Jackets a 3-2 lead. Nash then scored an insurance marker with just under four minutes left in the game. Ryan Johansen scored a hat trick in Game 5 to lead the ’13-’14 Blue Jackets to a 4-3 win and a chance to clinch a spot in the Ultimate NHL Playoff with a win in Game 6. However, the ’08-’09 Blue Jackets got a 28-save shutout performance from Mason as Nash and Jason Williams each scored a goal in their 2-0 win. Game 7 did not live up to its hype. The ’13-’14 Blue Jackets dominated from the get-go. They outshot the ’08-’09 Blue Jackets 26-8 in the first period alone as they held a 3-0 lead going into the second. They wound up winning by a score of 7-1. Marian Gaborik, Brandon Dubinsky, Cam Atkinson, Matt Calvert and Nathan Horton, along with Johansen, all posted multi-point efforts in the dominating win.
