Daniel Briere gave the 6th-seeded ’01-’02 Coyotes a 1-0 lead in the second period of Game 1 thanks to a PP tally, but a goal each from Rick Tocchet and Mika Alatalo gave the 7th-seeded ’99-’00 Coyotes a 2-1 lead by the end of the second. Then, a Daymond Langkow goal tied the game in the third and forced overtime. It was Shane Doan that would be the overtime here in Game 1 for the ’01-’02 Coyotes, with a goal at the 15:37 mark of overtime. In Game 2, Jeremy Roenick gave the ’99-’00 Coyotes a 2-1 lead seven plus minutes into the third period. However, seven minutes later, Michal Handzus scored to tie the game for the ’01-’02 Coyotes and then Doan scored on the PP with less than four minutes left to give them a 3-2 win. The ’01-’02 Coyotes then destroyed the ’99-’00 Coyotes 8-2 in Game 3 with nine players registering a point and six players registering more than one point.
The ’01-’02 Coyotes were less than a minute away from completing the sweep as they led late in Game 4, 1-0, but on the PP, Travis Green scored to tie the game for the ’99-’00 Coyotes and forced overtime. They had pulled their goaltender, Sean Burke, for the extra attacker at the time. Alatalo won it for the ’99-’00 Coyotes a little over two minutes into the overtime. The ’99-’00 Coyotes then put almost 20 shots on goal in the first period of Game 4 as they potted three goals to hold a 3-0 lead into the second. Green scored an insurance goal in the third as the ’99-’00 Coyotes staved off elimination again as they won Game 5, 4-2. They took Game 6 by the same score to force a Game 7 as Green potted two more goals in Game 6. Game 7 was tied 1-1 heading into the third period and Briere scored on the PP almost halfway through the period to give the ’01-’02 Coyotes a 2-1 lead. However, Doan tied the game two minutes later and then two and a half minutes after that defenseman Jyrki Lumme gave the ’00-’99 Coyotes their first lead of Game 7. Green scored, yet again, on the PP with less than four minutes left to help seal the 3-0 comeback and clinch a spot in the qualifier final for the ’00-’99 Coyotes.
