The 7th-seeded ’99-’00 Coyotes took Game 1 thanks to some scoring from their depth players in a 3-1 win. Winger Greg Adams posted two goals and an assist and defenseman Keith Carney tallied two assists. The top-seeded ’11-’12 Coyotes responded with three goals in the third period of Game 2 to lead them to a 6-3 win. Ray Whitney, a bit of foreshadowing here, led the charge for the top seed as he posted a goal and two assists in the win. Then, in Game 3, an early PP goal from Jeremy Roenick gave the ’99-’00 Coyotes some early momentum and they hung on late for a 3-2 win and a 2-1 series lead. It was almost the same story in Game 4 except for the ’11-’12 Coyotes. Shane Doan scored a minute and a half in and then they held on late for a 3-2 win to make this a 2-2 series.

Game 5 was tied 1-1 going into the third period where there was an explosion of five goals between the teams. Whitney notched a PP marker at the 1:31 mark to give the ’11-’12 Coyotes a 2-1 lead. Then, 16 seconds later, Lauri Korpikoski made it 3-1 for the top seed. Then, 28 seconds later, Raffi Torres gave the ’11-’12 Coyotes a 4-1 lead. They scored another a few minutes later which resulted in the ’99-’00 Coyotes pulling starting goalie Sean Burke for backup Robert Esche. Six seconds after that change was made, Doan potted one for the ’99-’00 Coyotes, but Mike Smith shut the door from their for the top seed as they held on for a 5-2 win. The ’99-’00 Coyotes used three goals in the second period to lead them to a 4-2 win in Game 6 with defenseman Jyrki Lumme‘s two assists leading the way. Game 7 was very similar to Game 6. The ’11-’12 Coyotes broke out to a big lead, which forced the ’99-’00 Coyotes to make a goalie change. Then, they potted one not to long after that, but again Smith shut the door the rest of the way. Whitney scored two goals and posted an assist to lead the offensive charge in the 5-2 win.
