The ’08-’09 Washington Capitals were the 26th seed in the inaugural Ultimate NHL Playoff. They were swept in the First Round by the 39th-seeded ’78-’79 Atlanta Flames, who would turn out to be the Cinderella story of the inaugural UNP by being the lowest seed to reach the Third Round.
Players to Watch:
- LW – Alex Ovechkin – Duh.
- D – Rod Langway – Back in the early ’80s, the Capitals were not doing well. Then they traded for Langway and everything turned around. A phenomenal defensive defenseman won two Norris Trophies and is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
- RW – Peter Bondra – Before Ovie, Bondra held most the goal-scoring records in Caps history. Also known as Bonzai, Bondra had incredible speed and had one of the best shots of his time.
The tournament begins on tomorrow! The 1st Round will carry over into Wednesday and the Semifinal Round will take place on Thursday with the Final on Friday.
