Game 1 was the only game of this series where the 2nd-seeded ’89-’90 Capitals had a clear advantage in the statistics. They outshot the 7th-seeded ’10-’11 Capitals 44-33 on their way to a 4-2 win. Dale Hunter posted a goal and an assist and defenseman Scott Stevens notched two assists to lead the way offensively. Game 2 was the beginning of Don Beaupre‘s standout play. He stopped 36 of 37 shots against in Game 2 as the ’89-’90 Capitals won 4-1. Michal Pivonka totaled a goal and an assist while defenseman Kevin Hatcher tallied two apples. The ’10-’11 Capitals outshot the ’89-’90 Capitals 61-27 in Game 3, but Beaupre was phenomenal as he stopped 59 of those 61 shots against. The ’89-’90 Capitals trailed 2-1 late in the third, but a PP goal from Pivonka tied it with seven plus minutes left and then Dino Ciccarelli scored the eventual game-winner with two plus minutes left. It was the ’89-’90 Capitals’ offense that clinched the sweep, though. They took Game 4, 6-4, as 11 different players registered a point. Five of those 11 players totaled more than one point with Ciccarelli and Kelly Miller each netting two goals to lead the way.
