Braden Holtby wasn’t great in this series, but he was good enough to lead the ’14-’15 Capitals over the ’08-’09 Capitals in six games. (via sportsnet.ca)

It was the 8th-seeded ’08-’09 Capitals that got the jump first in the series with a 4-1 win in Game 1. Defenseman Mike Green scored twice as they defeated the 5th-seeded ’14-’15 Capitals, 4-1. Then, the ’08-’09 Capitals held a 2-1 lead going into the third period. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored for the ’14-’15 Capitals just past the halfway point of the third to tie the game. From there, Game 2 turned into a marathon. It took until the third overtime for someone to score, and that someone was Kuznetsov, who won it for the ’14-’15 Capitals at the 10:29 mark. The ’14-’15 Capitals carried that momentum over into Game 3, which they won 3-1, where goalie Braden Holtby stopped all but one of the 31 shots he saw in the game. Then, in the third period of Game 4, Alex Ovechkin scored 30 seconds into the period to give the ’14-’15 Capitals a 3-1 lead.

However, later in the period, the ’08-’09 Capitals scored twice in a span of a minute with a goal from Ovechkin and a goal from Tomas Fleischmann. This game also went into overtime and just like in Game 2, it was the guy who forced overtime that eventually won it in overtime, Fleischmann, for the ’08-’09 Capitals. The ’14-’15 Capitals jumped on the ’08-’09 Capitals in Game 5 as they opened up a 5-1 lead and eventually won 5-2. Defenseman Matt Niskanen had a very good game as he posted a goal and three assists to lead them offensively. 27 seconds into the second period of Game 6, Nicklas Backstrom scored for the ’14-’15 Capitals to tie the game 1-1. Then, just 44 seconds later, Brooks Laich scored for the ’08-’09 Capitals to give them the lead right back. They lost that lead late in the period thanks to a PP goal from Ovechkin, who then scored five plus minutes into the third to give the ’14-’15 Capitals their first lead of the game. Ovechkin’s second goal would end up being the game- and series-clincher for the ’14-’15 Capitals, which means there will be a new Washington Capitals representative in the upcoming UNP.
