After Losing Game 1, the 3rd-seeded ’83-’84 Capitals Upset 2nd-seeded ’89-’90 Capitals in Five Games

Mike Gartner posted 14 points in the Semifinal to lead the ’83-’84 Capitals into the Qualifying Final over the ’89-’90 Capitals in five games. (via gamewornauctions.net)

The 2nd-seeded ’89-’90 Capitals won their only game of the series in Game 1. They scored three goals in the third period to lead them to a 4-2 win with defenseman Kevin Hatcher scoring two of those goals. The 3rd-seeded ’83-’84 Capitals then dominated in Game 2 where they outshot the ’89-’90 Capitals 57-28. They won 9-2 while four different players posted multi-point games with Mike Gartner‘s five (3 G, 2 A) leading the way. Then, they won Game 3 by a final of 6-0 with goalie Al Jensen posting a 31-save shutout. Just like in Game 2, Gartner posted five (1 G, 4 A) points to lead them offensively. Game 4 was a shootout. The ’83-’84 Capitals eventually took it 8-7 in overtime. 11 players registered a point for the ’89-’90 Capitals and 10 players registered a point for the ’83-’84 Capitals with three and six players registering multi-point games, respectively. Geoff Courtnall (4 G, 0 A) of the ’89-’90 Capitals and defenseman Scott Stevens (1 G, 3 A) and Bengt-Ake Gustafsson (2 G, 2 A) of the ’83-’84 Capitals all posted four point games. The ’83-’84 Capitals finished off the series by taking Game 5 by a final of 6-4. Gartner, yet again, led the ’83-’84 Capitals offensively with four assists.
