Goalie Al Jensen was very good in the tourney for the ’83-’84 Capitals and defensemen Kevin Hatcher and Rod Langway were just two parts of a very stingy defense that led them to the UNP. (via russianmachinebreaks.com)

The 3rd-seeded ’83-’84 Capitals were the better team right from the start. They got a 25-save shutout performance in Game 1 from goalie Al Jensen as they won 4-0. Bob Carpenter lead them offensively with a goal and two assists. Then, in Game 2, Jensen stopped 34 of 36 shots against as the ’83-’84 Capitals won 5-2 with Gary McAdams‘ three points (1 G, 2 A) leading the way. The 5th-seeded ’14-’15 Capitals took their first lead of the series in the first period of Game 3 when Alex Ovechkin scored at the 12:58 mark of the first. However, the ’83-’84 Capitals scored four goals in the second, which led them to a 5-2 win and a 3-0 series lead. This is where Mike Gartner stepped up his game for the first time in the series to take control. He posted two goals and one assist in Game 3 and then he posted two goals in Game 4 to lead the ’83-’84 Capitals to a 2-1 win, which completed the sweep. Jensen, again, had a stellar game as he stopped 27 of 28 shots against. With the ’83-’84 Capitals qualifying for the 2015 Ultimate NHL Playoff, there are now 10 teams that will be making their first appearances in the UNP.
