Marian Hossa, somewhat of a forgotten Ottawa Senator because of what he’s done elsewhere, totaled 8 goals and 5 assists to lead the ’02-’03 Senators offensively throughout the series. (via sensgameused.weebly.com)

It took a while for the first goal of the series to be scored. It wasn’t until the 19:23 mark of the third period when Martin Havlat scored a PP goal for the 7th-seeded ’03-’04 Senators and that would be the only goal of Game 1. Patrick Lalime, the starting netminder for both teams, posted a 32-save shutout for the ’03-’04 Senators in the win. The ’03-’04 Senators then opened up a 2-0 lead thanks to a Marian Hossa goal halfway through the second period of Game 2. However, Mike Fisher scored exactly seven minutes later and then Daniel Alfredsson scored just 35 seconds into the third to tie the game up for the 2nd-seeded ’02-’03 Senators. It remained 2-2 until 3:23 into overtime when Brian Pothier, of all people, scored the game-winner for the ’03-’04 Senators to give them a 2-0 series lead. The two offenses then broke out for a total of 12 goals in Game 3. Four goals in the third of Game 3 led the ’02-’03 Senators to a 7-2 win. Hossa scored a remarkable five goals in the win to lead the ’02-’03 Senators, which would become a recurring theme during their comeback in this series.

They needed a comeback in Game 4 after trailing 4-1 after two periods. They got a goal from Hossa 39 seconds into the third and then less than a minute later, Radek Bonk scored to narrow the lead to one, but that was as close as the ’02-’03 Senators got to a comeback. Hossa led the ’03-’04 Senators with two goals and an assist in their win. The ’02-’03 Senators’ comeback would begin with a 3-1 win in Game 5 as three different players scored to lead the way. Then, they took Game 6 by a final of 5-2 with four goals in the second period as Hossa’s four points (2 G, 2 A) led them to the win. Finally, in Game 7, Bryan Smolinski gave the ’03-’04 Senators an early 1-0 lead, but Lalime would shut the door from their for the ’02-’03 Senators. Alfie scored late in the second and then early in the third to turn the tide. Then Fisher scored an unassisted goal with a little over three minutes left to seal the deal for the ’02-’03 Senators.
