Goaltending wasn’t really the main highlight in this series, but in the four games he and his team won, Ray Emery of the ’06-’07 Senators, allowed just five goals. (via si.com)
This series was dominated by the “visiting” team’s up until Game 7. The 4th-seeded ’01-’02 Senators took Game 1 by a score of 4-3 thanks to two goals in the third period. A goal from Todd White at the 15:46 mark of the third to tie it and then Jody Hull scored the game-winner at the 18:32 mark of the third. Then, in Game 2, the ’01-’02 Senators dominated to a 6-1 win with Radek Bonk and Daniel Alfredsson both posting three points (1 G, 2 A) in the win. The top-seeded ’06-’07 Senators responded with a 6-0 win in Game 3 with Ray Emery stopping all 33 shots against. Dany Heatley netted a hat trick and added an assist in the win to lead the the top seed offensively. The top seed then took Game 4, 5-3, with the formidable “Pizza Line,” made up of Alfie, Heatley and Jason Spezza, totaling seven points in the win.
In Game 5, it was the ’06-’07 Senators that scored first, courtesy of Dean McAmmond, but the ’01-’02 Senators scored the next two before Alfie tied it up early in the second. Then, again, the ’01-’02 Senators scored the next two to hold a 4-2 lead halfway through the second period. Spezza narrowed that lead one goal late in the second, but the ’01-’02 Senators notched two quick goals in the third. Spezza then potted two for the ’06-’07 Senators, including one in the final minute, to get the hat trick, but they lost 6-5. Then, McAmmond and Heatley scored in the first for the ’06-’07 Senators and that was all they would need to force a Game 7 because Emery would allow just one goal on 38 shots against. The ’06-’07 Senators became the first “home” team to win a game in the series with a 4-1 win in Game 7. Emery stopped 28 of 29 while Spezza registered another hat trick as the top seed advances to the Final.
