The Inaugural Florida Panthers (’93-’94) Defeat 4th-seeded ’11-’12 Panthers in Six Games After Trailing 2-1

The inaugural Florida Panthers upset the ’11-’12 Panthers in six games after trailing two games to one to advance to the second round. (via panthers.nhl.com)

The 5th-seeded ’93-’94 Panthers held a 2-1 lead going into the third period of Game 1 with Jesse Belanger netting both of their two goals. Then, defenseman Gord Murphy scored exactly one minute into the third to give the ’93-’94 Panthers a 3-1 lead and his goal would become the game-winner, 3-2 the final. The 4th-seeded ’11-’12 Panthers responded with a 3-1 win in Game 2 as Kris Versteeg scored all three of their goals for the hat trick. The ’11-’12 Panthers then scored three goals in the first period of Game 3 to hold a 3-1 lead at the first intermission and that’s all goaltender Jose Theodore would need. The ’11-’12 Panthers took a 2-1 series lead with the 4-2 win. The ’93-’94 Panthers then dominated Game 4 on their way to a 6-1 win. Defenseman Brian Benning totaled four points (1 G, 3 A) and Scott Mellanby totaled three points (1 G, 2 A) to lead them to the win. Game 5 was just a 1-1 game heading into the third period, but the two teams combined for six goals in the third period. The ’93-’94 Panthers scored four of them with Stu Barnes accounting for two of them as they went on to win 5-3. Goalie John Vanbiesbrouck then led the ’93-’94 Panthers to a series-clinching 3-1 win in Game 6 by stopping 35 of 36 shots against.
