Berenson’s Late Goal in Game 7 Leads 2nd-seeded ’69-’70 Blues Through to UNP After Defeating 8th-seeded ’13-’14 Blues

This series started out with an overtime. Gary Sabourin scored in the first to give the 2nd-seeded ’69-’70 Blues a 1-0 lead and then Alex Steen netted a PP marker early in the second to tie the game for the 8th-seeded ’13-’14 Blues. There would not be another goal until Steen potted his second of the game seven and a half minutes into overtime. Game 2 was also tied after two periods and then Frank St. Marseille broke the tie late in the third, which was the game-winner and series-tier for the ’69-’70 Blues. They then took Game 3 by a score of 3-2 while Red Berenson was the only player to register a multi-point game with two assists. Game 4 was tied 2-2 after the first period with Steen scoring both of the ’13-’14 Blues’ goals. In the second period, Vladimir Sobotka scored on the PP to give the ’13-’14 Blues a 3-2 lead and later in the period Patrik Berglund scored an insurance marker that was not needed as the ’13-’14 Blues won 4-2.

Then, the ’13-’14 Blues took a 2-1 lead in the second period of Game 5 thanks to a goal from defenseman Alex Pietrangelo. However, Berenson scored early in the third to tie the game back up. With a little more than three minutes left in regulation, Phil Goyette scored for the ’69-’70 Blues to give them their first lead of the game. The ’69-’70 Blues won 4-2 and took a 3-2 series lead with the win. The ’13-’14 Blues forced a Game 7 with a 5-2 win in Game 6. Pietrangelo led them to the win with three assists while fellow defenseman Jay Bouwmeester and Jaden Schwartz and Steen all posted mutli-point games. Game 7 was tied 1-1 after two periods, but Chris Stewart broke the tie four plus minutes into the third to give the ’13-’14 Blues a 2-1 lead. Then, 11 and a half minutes into the period, Berenson tied it for the ’69-’70 Blues and at the 17:10 mark, he scored the eventual game-winner and series-clincher.
