This series was fairly close, a couple three-goal margin games. Game’s 1 and 2 were both decided by one goal. It was Mike Modano‘s goal almost six minutes into the third that was the game-winner for the top-seeded ’98-’99 Stars in a 3-2 win to start the series. Then, in Game 2, the 8th-seeded ’05-’06 Stars took a 3-2 lead into the third thanks to a goal each from Niko Kapanen (PP) and defenseman Sergei Zubov in the second period. However, Jere Lehtinen tied the game exactly eight minutes into the third for the top seed and then just 30 seconds later, Tony Hrkac scored the final goal of the game and the game-winner as the top seed won 4-3. The ’05-’06 Stars finally got on the board in the series with a 6-3 win in Game 3. Zubov, this time for the ’05-’06 Stars, tallied three assists to lead them in the win while the top line of Modano-Lehtinen-Brenden Morrow combined for three goals and three assists.

The ’05-’06 Stars took a 4-2 lead early in the third period of Game 4 thanks to a goal from Jason Arnott. However, Brett Hull and defenseman Richard Matvichuk scored for the top seed later in the third to force an overtime. The ’05-’06 Stars’ Stu Barnes scored in overtime to tie the series up 2-2 just over four minutes into the overtime period. The top seed responded to the overtime loss with a 3-0 win in Game 5 as goalie Ed Belfour pitched a 26-save shutout while defenseman Derian Hatcher scored two of their three goals. Now facing elimination, the ’05-’06 Stars took Game 6, 2-1, to force a Game 7 with a goal each from defensemen Philippe Boucher and Zubov. In Game 7, Lehtinen scored twice in the first for the ’05-’06 Stars as they took a 2-1 lead into the second period. A PP goal from Brett Hull notted the game at two for the top seed seven plus minutes into the period. Then, with just over four minutes left in the period, Modano scored for the ’05-’06 Stars to give them a 3-2 lead and they would hang on to win Game 7 to upset the top seed.
