The ’88-’89 Calgary Flames were the 19th seed in the inaugural Ultimate NHL Playoff. They were the runners up in the inaugural UNP as they fell to the top-seeded ’76-’77 Montreal Canadiens in the Final. They swept the 46th-seeded ’19-’20 Quebec Bulldogs in the First Round and then swept the 14th-seeded ’13-’14 Los Angeles Kings in the Second Round. In the Third Round, they defeated the 3rd-seeded ’07-’08 Detroit Red Wings in six games to advance to the Quarterfinal. There they defeated the 6th-seeded ’12-’13 Chicago Blackhawks in five games. In the Semifinal, they took a 3-0 series lead over 23rd-seeded ’79-’80 Buffalo Sabres, but needed a victory in Game 7 to reach the final, which they did.

Players to Watch:

  • RW – Hakan Loob – One of the main contributors to the ’88-’89 Flames’ 2nd place finish in the UNP and was awarded the UNP “Rocket” Richard Trophy for most goals in the tournament with 23 in 31 games played. He was also awarded the UNP Ted Lindsay Award for tournament’s most outstanding player.
  • C – Joe Nieuwendyk – Another key part of the ’88-’89 Flames’ runner up finish. He finished tied with Loob for most points in the tournament with 40 points in 31 games and shared he UNP Art Ross Trophy.
  • RW – Jarome Iginla – Mr. Calgary Flame himself. He was always one of my favorites to watch. He’s the franchises all-time leading scored with 525 goals, 570 assists and 1,095 points in 1,219 games played.
