Top-seeded ’88-’89 Flames Drop Game 1, But Win Next Four to Defeat 8th-seeded ’06-’07 Flames in Five Games

Game 1 was tied 1-1 after two periods, but the 8th-seeded ’06-’07 Flames scored three times in the third to take the opening game 4-1. Daymond Langkow and Tony Amonte scored just 28 seconds apart in that third period after Langkow scored only six seconds into the game to begin the scoring. The top-seeded ’88-’89 Flames then took the second game of the series 6-4 while scoring four goals in the first period. Joe Mullen and Joe Nieuwendyk accounted for all four of those goals with both of them netting two. Then, in Game 3, the ’06-’07 Flames held a 3-1 lead after just ten and a half minutes of play, and they held that lead until the third period. The ’88-’89 Flames rallied off three goals in the third to tie the game and then win it 4-3, with defenseman Al MacInnis potting two of those goals. Game 4 ended with the same scoreline, 4-3, as the ’88-’89 Flames opened a 3-1 series lead. Joe Mullen totaled two goals and an assist to lead them to the win while MacInnis netted the game-winner four and a half minutes into the third. In Game 5, the ’88-’89 Flames held a 2-0 lead after the first period. The ’06-’07 Flames got one back in the second, courtesy of Alex Tanguay, but the ’88-’89 Flames held on for a 4-2 win to take the series.
