The 6th-seeded ’90-’91 Flames held a 4-2 lead heading into the third period of Game 1 thanks to three goals in the second period, including two from Theoren Fleury. The 3rd-seeded ’03-’04 Flames scored two goals in a span of two minutes in the third to tie the game and eventually force an overtime. Then, Oleg Saprykin scored the game-winner for the ’03-’04 Flames four plus minutes into the overtime period. In the following game, the two teams were tied 2-2 after two periods, but in the third, Gary Roberts scored the lone goal to lead the ’90-’91 Flames for a 3-2 win. The ’90-’91 Flames then led Game 3 2-0 after the first two periods, but two PP goals in the third from the ’03-’04 Flames led to another overtime. This time it was Jarome Iginla who scored the OT winner just 29 seconds into the period to give the ’03-’04 Flames a 2-1 series lead. Then, in Game 4, a hat trick from Mark Hunter led the ’90-’91 Flames to a 7-6 win to knot the series 2-2.
The two teams were, again, tied after two periods, 3-3. Almost three minutes into the third period, Joe Nieuwendyk batted home a rebound to give the ’90-’91 Flames a 4-3 lead. A little over two minutes later, Chris Clark tied the game for the ’03-’04 Flames and then with less than seven minutes left, Craig Conroy gave the ’03-’04 Flames a 5-4 lead, their first since early in the second period. They held onto that lead and took a 3-2 series lead. The ’90-’91 Flames forced a Game 7 with a 5-3 win in Game 6 as Gary Roberts led them to the win with two goals and an assist. Unfortunately, the Game 7 was very anticlimactic. Don’t you hate that? Anyway, Iginla scored twice in the first period as the ’03-’04 Flames took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Iginla completed his natural hat trick just 41 seconds into the second period and the ’03-’04 Flames finished off the series with a 6-2 win.
