3rd-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks Defeat 6th-seeded ’96-’97 Mighty Ducks in Five Games

Game 1 of this series saw just one goal in the first two periods, but then saw five in the third. Three of those came from the 6th-seeded ’96-’97 Mighty Ducks as they won 4-2. Teemu Selanne led the way to the win with a goal and two assists for the ’96-’97 Mighty Ducks and also potted two goals for the 3rd-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks in the loss. Then, Game 2 was tied 1-1 after two periods,  but the ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks scored four in the third to win 5-1. Ten different players registered a point for the ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks with Andy McDonald, Samuel Pahlsson and Todd Marchant all registering multi-point games. In Game 3, Selanne score almost six minutes into the third period to give the ’96-’97 Mighty Ducks a 2-1 lead, but Joffrey Lupul tied the game back up for the ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks six plus minutes later, which forced overtime. With less than two minutes left in the first overtime, defenseman Scott Niedermayer slammed home a Guy Hebert rebound to give the ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks a 2-1 series lead. Niedermayer then tallied three assists to lead the ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks to a 5-3 win in Game 4 with McDonald and Selanne both scoring a goal and adding an assist. The ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks wrapped up the series with a 4-3 win in Game 5 as two goals from Lupul led them to a berth in the Semifinal Round.
