The first game of the series was tied 2-2 after the first period, but the 7th-seeded ’08-’09 Ducks rattled off three goals in the third to win 5-2. The ’08-’09 Ducks’ “twins,” Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf led the way with Perry scoring twice and Getzlaf tallying three assists. Then, the ’08-’09 Ducks took a 2-0 series lead with a 7-2 win in Game 2 with defenseman James Wisniewski‘s four points (1G, 3A) leading the way while both Teemu Selanne and Brendan Morrison pitching in two goals. The 2nd-seeded ’02-’03 Mighty Ducks finally got on the board in the series with a 2-1 overtime win in Game 3 with Petr Sykora scoring the winner with 2:40 left in the period. This was just the first of many games in this series where the two goaltenders were the First and Second stars of the game. Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 37 of 38 for the ’02-’03 Mighty Ducks while Jonas Hiller stopped 45 of 47 for the ’08-’09 Ducks.
Game 4 had the exact same scoreline (2-1) with the ’02-’03 Mighty Ducks winning in regulation. Giguere and Hiller were First and Second stars, again, as Giguere stopped 38 of 39 and Hiller stopped 38 of 40. The ’08-’09 Ducks won Game 5, 4-3, with Hiller stopping 42 of 45 and Wisniewski’s two points making him the only player with more than one point for the winning side. Giguere registered a 31-save shutout in Game 6 to force a Game 7 for the ’02-’03 Mighty Ducks while defenseman Sandis Ozolinsh led the way offensively with two assists. Hiller, meanwhile, stopped 39 of 41 shots in the loss. The ’02-’03 Mighty Ducks held a 3-1 lead going into the third period of Game 7 thanks to three unanswered goals and two in the second period. However, at the 5:15 mark of the third, Chris Kunitz made it a one-goal game for the ’08-’09 Ducks and then just 11 seconds later, Ryan Getzlaf scored to tie the game 3-3. Then, with just over seven minutes left in regulation George Moustache, I mean, George Parros scored the game and series-winner to complete the upset for the ’08-’09 Ducks.
