The third-seeded ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks got off to a hot start by scoring three goals in the first period of Game 1. They tacked on another in the third to win the opening game 4-1. Defenseman Scott Niedermayer posted a four point night (1G, 3A) to lead the way. Then, they won Game 2, 4-3, while scoring three goals in the second period. Andy McDonald and Teemu Selanne led them in the 4-3 win with McDonald registering three assists while Selanne posted two goals and an assist. The 7th-seeded ’08-’09 Ducks got on the board in the series with a 3-2 win in Game 3 on the back of three goals in the second period. Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf were the only two to post more than one point as they registered a goal and an assist and two assists, respectively. Three goals in the first period then helped lead the ’08-’09 Ducks to a 4-3 win in Game 4 to tie the series at two. Perry, yet again, helped lead the way as he scored twice and added an assist. The “goals in bunches” trend continued in Game 5 as the ’08-’09 Ducks scored four times in the first period on their way to a 6-4 win. Getzlaf accounted for two of those goals and added two assists to lead the ’08-’09 Ducks to a win away from the Qualifier Final.
In Game 6, Selanne scored five and a half minutes into the second period to give the ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks a 2-0 lead. However, late in the second, Selanne scored for the ’08-’09 Ducks to make it a one-goal game. Then, Perry scored a PP goal with less than nine minutes left in the third to tie the game and eventually force OT for the ’08-’09 Ducks. The game would eventually be decided in double overtime when Perry potted home a Jonas Hiller rebound to force a Game 7 for the ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks. Perry then gave the ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks an early lead in Game 7 and they led 1-0 going into the second period. However, a goal each from Brendan Morrison and then (S.) Niedermayer gave the ’08-’09 Ducks a lead going into the third period. Just 17 seconds into the third, McDonald scored a shorthanded marker for the ’05-’06 Ducks to tie the game. Then, with exactly 3:10 left in the third, Selanne scored, yet again, to give the ’05-’06 Mighty Ducks a 3-2 lead and they held on for a 3-2 win. With the win in Game 7, they clinch a spot in the Qualifier Final against the top seed and Cup-winners.
