Lecavalier’s Overtime Winner in Game 7 Leads 7th-seeded ’05-’06 Lightning in Upset of 2nd-seeded ’14-’15 Lightning

A four-goal second period led the 2nd-seeded ’14-’15 Lightning to a 7-2 win in Game 1. Defenseman Anton Stralman led the way offensively with two goals and an assist, and he was also the only player with more than one goal. Then, in Game 2, a goal from defenseman Dan Boyle halfway through the third period turned out to be the game-winner for the 7th-seeded ’05-’06 Lightning in a 6-5 win. Despite the losing effort, Steven Stamkos netted a hat trick for the ’14-’15 Lightning. The ’05-’06 Lightning trailed 2-1 after two periods in Game 3, but then just 17 seconds into the third, Brad Richards scored to tie the game at two. The game went into overtime when Ruslan Fedotenko won it six and a half minute in for the ’05-’06 Lightning as they took a 2-1 series lead. In Game 4, the ’14-’15 Lightning led 3-1 after the first period. However, a goal from Martin St. Louis early in the second and early in the third had the game tied with 14-plus minutes left in the third. A couple of minutes later, defenseman Matt Carle scored to give the ’14-’15 Lightning the lead back.

Then, just seven seconds later, Stamkos scored his second of the game and that eventually became the game-winner as the ’14-’15 Lightning won 5-4. The ’05-’06 Lightning then took Game 5 by a final of 5-3 as Fredrik Modin posted a three-point night while Richards scored twice. With the ’14-’15 Lightning now facing elimination, they forced a Game 7 with a 5-3 win in Game 6. Stamkos accounted for four of the ’14-’15 Lightning’s five goals while linemate Ryan Callahan tallied three assists. Then, in Game 7, Vincent Lecavalier scored almost six minutes in to give the ’05-’06 Lightning an early lead. Late in the opening period, Brett Connolly scored to tie the game for the ’14-’15 Lightning and the game remained 1-1 until just over a minute into overtime. At the 1:16 mark of OT, Lecavalier completed the upset and clinched a spot in the Semifinal Round for the ’05-’06 Lightning.
