St. Louis and Richards Lead Top-seeded ’03-’04 Lightning in Sweep of 8th-seeded ’06-’07 Lightning

Brad Richards began the scoring in this series 21 seconds into the second period of Game 1 as he gave the top-seeded ’03-’04 Lightning a 1-0 lead. They held a 3-2 lead after that period and then took a 4-2 lead almost eight minutes into the third courtesy of Cory Stillman. The 8th-seeded ’06-’07 Lightning got one back a few minutes later, but 4-3 would be the final. Then, in Game 2, the ’03-’04 Lightning opened up a 3-0 lead by just 30 seconds into the second period. Goalie Nikolai Khabibulin would only allow one goal on 29 shots against for the top seed as they held on for a 3-1 win. Game 3 saw the two teams combine for five goals in the first period. The ’03-’04 Lightning led 3-2 going into the second and Richards would score the only goal in the second to give the ’03-’04 Lightning a 4-2 lead heading into the third. The two teams each scored once in the first 12 minutes of the third to make it a 5-3 game. The ’06-’07 Lightning scored a shorthanded goal in the final seconds, but there as not nearly enough time to tie the game. Trying to avoid the sweep, the ’06-’07 Lightning took a 2-1 lead into the second period. Martin St. Louis scored his second of the game for the ’03-’04 Lightning on the PP just 10 seconds into the second to tie the game. The ’03-’04 Lightning scored two more goals later in the third to take a 4-2 lead. The ’06-’07 Lightning made it a one-goal game halfway through the third, but the top seed held on for a 4-3 win to complete the sweep.
